You may have heard people talking about how some folks “don’t age well.” This doesn’t mean they are physically aging in an incorrect way–there are many different ways people can physically age, all of which are normal.
Instead, they are referring to their general demeanor and attitude toward aging and life.
What does it mean when a person “doesn’t age very well”?
When someone doesn’t age well, it is referring to their general attitude toward being older and aging. For example, some people exhibit some negative behavior when they begin to age, such as…
- Increased anxiety and stress
- Strained relationships with the other people in their lives
- An overly negative outlook or attitude concerning life
- Increased isolation from other people
- A lack of trust in themselves or damaged self-confidence
- A resistance to learning, experiencing, or trying new things
All people will physically age; no matter how hard a person may fight against the physical effects of aging, they are still going to have wrinkles, gray hair, and all the other accouterments of getting older.
However, this doesn’t mean their perspective on life and attitude also has to “turn gray.”
Why do some people age better than others?
Simply put, people who age better than others haven’t discovered the magical cure-all to stop the aging process. They still develop wrinkles and gray hair, just like everyone else.
However, they do have some special key differences that help them age better than the rest:
1. They maintain a positive and upbeat attitude.
This doesn’t mean people who age better never experience hard times and challenges. They have those just like all people do.
However, they are better at maintaining a more positive and upbeat attitude, which helps them see the brighter side of a situation rather than all the “doom and gloom.” This makes them feel and appear far more youthful.
2. They strive to be lifelong learners.
People who age well understand the importance of continual learning. They know that education doesn’t stop when their classroom days are through.
Instead, they seek new opportunities to learn and grow all the time, always willing to consider new information and broaden their horizons.
They don’t want to stay the same because it’s comfortable and familiar–instead, they want to expand and grow.
3. They prioritize taking care of their health.
It’s always easier to age when you are taking good care of yourself. People who age well know the importance of good health maintenance. They get good sleep, eat well, exercise, attend medical check-ups, and more.
They want to feel their best, so they do whatever they can to be good stewards of their own bodies. In turn, this helps them feel much younger than they actually are.
4. They remain socially active.
People who age well often have good social support systems. They do their best to nurture their relationships and stay socially active among friends and family.
Rather than using “old age” as an excuse to close themselves off from social gatherings and activities, they choose to embrace them.
In turn, they have a great social support network that helps them feel more youthful.
5. They don’t fall into old age as an excuse to opt out.
Some people use old age as an excuse to not do certain activities anymore.
For example, when presented with a fun opportunity, someone who doesn’t age well may let themselves believe that they’re “too old” to try that new opportunity…even if that is far from the truth.
People who age well don’t use old age as an excuse to avoid trying new things and exploring.
