Bipolar disorder, formerly known as manic-depressive or manic depression, is a mental health disorder best known for a fluctuation in moods. These moods result in episodes of elation and or episodes of depression.
Currently, there are 2.3 million US citizens diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
You probably know that bipolar means that a person’s moods fluctuate greatly, and you may have even joked about someone you know being bipolar because they’re “moody.”
Although bipolar disorder is a mood disorder, there is a great deal more to it than a simple up and down of emotions.
This Guide will go into detail about what bipolar disorder is, its signs and symptoms, types of bipolar disorder, causes of bipolar disorder, as well as how to get diagnosed and treat bipolar disorder.
This Guide is not intended to diagnose you or others, but it can help you understand more about the disorder or give you information to take to a trained specialist if you identify with some of the signs of bipolar disorder that you read about.
There are several different symptoms that define bipolar disorder. There are also many several types of bipolar such as bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymic disorder.
In this section, we’ll cover the DSM-5 criteria for bipolar disorder as well as the different types of diagnoses listed in the DSM-5. We will also include real-life quotes from people who have been diagnosed with a version of bipolar and what their life is like living with the disorder.
