Ways to Prevent Teenage Obesity
Young children look cute and cuddly when they’re chubby. We enjoy feeding children as much as they want, and even more after that. We feel they will outgrow their fat and mature slim and strong. We never envision that they will remain fat and become obese later on. Back to Top of your health online page
Obesity among teenagers can lead to a great deal of complex problems, ranging from physical to psychological. Teenagers enjoy the food and are not concerned about their growing big since they figure they will either outgrow it or expend enough energy to remove the excess fat.
Parents and doctors realize the magnitude of the problems that the teenagers will be facing and have tried various ways and means to stop them from becoming obese. Obesity occurs when the weight is significantly higher, about 20% than the accepted healthy weight. Here are some precautions to help stop teenagers from becoming overweight.
Introduce your teenager to a strict and rigid diet. Teenagers are bound to find ways to go around the diet unless you impose disciplinary actions whenever they refuse to follow the diet. Avoid junk food, like sugary drinks, high fat fast food and processed food.
Check the nutritional value of the food your teenager is eating. Provide a variety of food for your teenager so they don’t get bored eating the same diet meal daily.
Encourage them to drink a lot of water. It keeps them hydrated and helps in the digestive process. Don’t stock food that will tempt your teenager, like chocolates, sweets and candies.
Seeing tidbits lying around the house will tempt them to take nibbles here and there. It will spoil their appetite and ruin their diet program. Whatever effort they exerted to lose weight could all be wasted in just a few minutes of nibbling on forbidden snacks.
Encourage your children to play outdoors more often. You can apply the autocratic approach and limit the time they spend on television, computers, video games or indoor board games. Another approach would be to find their favorite outdoor sport and find ways to have them play it regularly.
There may be extracurricular activities, school events or neighborhood sports fests that are regularly scheduled throughout the year. Encourage their friends or group mates to participate in the same sports. T
his may be a positive form of peer pressure. Expose them to tournaments and sports events and build up their enthusiasm for the sport. Be sure they are properly equipped and secure when trying out for a sport.
You want them to exercise vigorously and at the same instance, be assured they will not get hurt in the process.
Join the group and lead by example. Get the same diet meal.
Show your children that you can eat the same nutritious food that they eat. Refrain from eating food that has no nutritional value. Your child will follow anything that you do and it is important you set a good example for them.
Maintain a physical fitness program, join them in their sports If possible and eat healthy and nutritious food. If obesity still continues to hound your teenagers, consult a medical practitioner. They might have disorders which can be tracked through medical tests.
