Understanding Blood Pressure and its Effects

Blood pressure is generally the pressure that is exerted on the walls of the arteries. When the heart pumps out blood, it passes through the arteries into the veins. There are different reasons why a person can develop high blood pressure. The most important factor according to studies is the increase in stress levels.

Apart from this, changes in eating habits and increase in sodium content in the body are also factors for the occurrence of high blood pressure. Blood pressure is measured using a device called a Mercury manometer. The device measures the pressure of blood in units of millimeter of mercury.

Systolic pressure and diastolic pressure are the maximum and minimum pressure values of blood pressure. The average value obtained from these pressure measurements gives the nominal or actual blood pressure of a person. Usually the measurement is written in the form of systolic pressure over diastolic pressure.

Any change in the value of systolic pressure and diastolic pressure may result either in high blood pressure or low blood pressure. It is very important for a person to maintain their health in order to stay away from ailments which are caused due to high blood pressure.

High blood pressure is usually present when there is an increase in systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. The measurement usually goes over 120/80 mm Hg.

A person affected with high blood pressure may experience shortness of breath, continuous sweating, aggravation and increase in stress levels, however, often there are no symptoms. When this phenomenon occurs, the heart tends to pump more blood into the arteries to increase the flow of blood to the organs.

Under such conditions, there are chances that the heart will become weak over time. It is more vulnerable. Heart attacks are common in people suffering from high blood pressure.

Low blood pressure usually occurs in a person who has a value below 120/80 mm Hg. The symptoms that are observed are dizziness, light-headedness, fainting and in rare cases, shock. Gravity is also another factor for causing low blood pressure in a person.

This can be noticed when a person faints suddenly after he stands from a sitting position. When low blood pressure is present, usually there is less pumping of blood going from the heart into the arteries.

As aging is sometimes a cause of high blood pressure, it is always advisable to carry out frequent checks in order to maintain a stable blood pressure. Have a balanced diet and an active lifestyle to protect yourself and your heart.
