The Secret to Keeping Your Skin Healthy While Wearing a Mask

Face masks can be hard on your skin, but that’s a small price to pay for reducing the spread of COVID-19. Still, you want to keep your skin healthy for the sake of your overall wellbeing and self-esteem.

Why do masks irritate your skin? It’s mostly a matter of friction and moisture. A mask that fits poorly will slide around when you walk or talk. Any mask may trap in oil, perspiration, and dirt.

With prolonged use, that can lead to rashes, itchiness, and the new acne known as maskne. You can fight back by learning how to take care of your skin and masks. Try these tips for gentle and effective skin care.

Tips for Taking Care of Your Skin:

1. Wash correctly. While many experts recommend washing your hands at least 6 to 10 times a day, you usually need to wash your face just once in the morning and at bedtime. Use warm water and move your fingers gently in circles.

2. Moisturize daily. Apply moisturizer immediately after washing to reduce dryness. If your skin is already irritated, look for products with dimethicone, which creates an additional protective layer.

3. Know your skin type. Figure out whether your skin is oily, dry, or normal, so you can select the appropriate products for you. You may also have combination skin that requires different products for different zones on your face.

4. Simplify your routine. You may need to cut back on any strong chemicals that you usually use on your face. That often includes peels, scrubs, and any product that contains salicylic acid.

5. Skip the makeup. If possible, forget about makeup temporarily. If that makes you uncomfortable, look for noncomedogenic formulas that won’t block your pores.

6. Reconsider facial hair. Trim your beard if it interferes with wearing a mask. Also remember that beards may become contaminated if you’re sick and may encourage you to touch your face more.

7. See your doctor. Talk with your doctor about your individual questions. That’s especially important if you’re dealing with chronic conditions, such as eczema or rosacea.

Tips for Taking Care of Your Mask:

1. Size it up. A mask that fits well is less likely to irritate your skin. You want it to be comfortably snug, rather than too tight or too loose.

2. Choose natural fibers. Cotton and other natural fibers allow your skin to breathe. Avoid synthetics like nylon and polyester.

3. Check your ears. Are your ears sore? Try rotating between a variety of masks with different kinds of loops and ties. You may also want to wear a headband with buttons, so you can attach your mask to something other than your ears.

4. Stock up. Keep at least 2 masks handy each day. That way you can switch them if they become wet or need to be washed.

5. Remove carefully. Wash or sanitize your hands before taking off your mask. Touch only the ear loops or ties. Launder your dirty mask right away or store it in a disposable or washable bag if necessary.

6. Take breaks. Schedule some time out in a safe place if you must wear your mask for much of the day. You might take a 15-minute break every 3 hours.

7. Wash and dry. Clean your masks by hand or in your washing machine with hot water and hypoallergenic detergent. Tumble dry or hang them in the sun. A clean mask also protects you from bacteria and skin oils.

Simple washing and moisturizing will prevent many skin issues caused by masks. If you need more than DIY treatments, talk with your doctor or see a dermatologist.

Skin is In! Easy Tips for Keeping Yours Fresh and Protected

Nowadays, women and men both strive to keep their skin looking youthful. Having fresh, healthy-looking skin helps you preserve overall youthfulness. And who wouldn't enjoy looking a few years younger?

Use these skin-care tips to keep your skin fresh, healthy, and protected so you, too, can enjoy that youthful look:

1. Aim for eight hours of sleep. There's a direct correlation between how much sleep you get on a regular basis and how healthy your skin is. Of course, the exact number of hours your body needs depends on your body's unique character and age, but it's important for your skin for you to get enough sleep.

* When you sleep, your body has a chance to heal from the day's wear and tear. Depriving your body of this necessity interferes with its natural daily maintenance and ages you more quickly.

2. Keep hydrated. Staying hydrated is a key element for fresh and youthful-looking skin. Water is very effective at flushing the system of free radicals that can cause your skin to look dull and unhealthy.

* Drink the recommended 6-8 glasses of water per day.

* Consume lots of fresh fruits. Besides hydration from the fruit's natural juice, another skin-enhancing benefit of fruit is its Vitamin C.

* Heating and air conditioning dry out the skin, so give your skin a break periodically and bask in the natural outdoors.

3. Relax. Taking a break from the day to day hustle and bustle protects your skin in several ways. Tension and stress show up on your face, causing strained expressions. In addition, when you're stressed, your skin is more sensitive, leading to acne breakouts and other skin challenges.

* Take weekends off if you can.
* Use your days off to unwind instead of running errands.
* Allocate a budget and a few weeks each year for a vacation.
* Meditate daily or partake regularly in yoga.

4. Use sun block. As much as you may enjoy lounging around in the sun, be wary of the fact that overexposure to sun can dramatically age your skin. Therefore, if you must bask in the sun's rays, always remember to wear sun block.

5. Stock up on antioxidants. Antioxidants are essential in banishing damaging free radicals from your system and improving the healthy appearance of your skin.

* Take vitamin supplements that are rich in antioxidants.

* Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants, like watermelon, berries, spinach, kale, broccoli, and many more.

* Avoid foods that can contribute to the free radical build up in your body, like highly processed foods, foods with preservatives, meat cooked at high temperatures, and most saturated fats.

These simple, yet effective, tips will help protect your skin and keep it looking fresh, healthy, and youthful. Plus, you can adapt them with very little cost or effort.

How great it is to know that more youthful skin is within reach! Give these techniques a try and you'll be pleasantly surprised to realize how easily you can achieve - and maintain - the enviable skin you've always wanted.
