teen travel - Hungary - Budapest by Rachel
We came into Hungry from Croatia. We traveled by country roads and up along the side of the touristy Lake Balaton. After one night on the road we approached the capital.
Budapest is the capital of Hungary. It is made up of two parts, Buda and Pest, which are divided by the river Danube.
Buda was one of the four royal towns, where the kings lived. It is very beautiful; it has lots of very old architecture.
We spent the first day in Budapest getting some service done on the campervan and shopping for food, washing clothes and generally housekeeping.
On the second day there we went on the metro from Romai Camping, where we were staying, into the heart of Budapest. The station was on the Buda side of the Danube. We could see the Parliament house across the river. The Parliament house was magnificent! It was built in Renaissance style. It was being restored, half of it was a bit damaged and as black as pitch, the other was a creamy white colour, and perfectly restored. Although half of it was done already, the building was enormous; they still had a big job to go. The river was flooded because of all the snow melting upstream.
After admiring the view we walked around Buda. There were lots of antique shops as well as statues (mythological and religious) and churches. The architecture was exquisite! We walked up to Castle hill and climbed up the side entrance steps to the castle.
You can go inside the surrounding walls which have spectacular views over the city. We went to a very famous cathedral called St Matthias' Cathedral. As you walk into the cathedral, it just takes your breath away... the entire interior is elaborately decorated in brightly coloured murals. We had an English tour guide who was very good and extremely helpful.
The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it is built in a neo-gothic style, this is why it is so colourful, you see, most gothic cathedrals were elaborately painted in vivid colour.
The cathedral has a very long history. One of the Hungarian kings had his coronation ceremony here. In Ottoman times the Turks took it over and converted it into a mosque and it was completely taken down and restored to its former glory in 1896.
The cathedral is renowned for its acoustics; in fact the acoustics are so good in St Matthias Cathedral that they still have concerts in the cathedral to this day. The guide said that there are several concerts each month. When we were there, there was a choir tuning up, for a performance later that night.
After touring around the cathedral we went upstairs to the treasury. The treasury had A LOT of treasures including... gold crucifixes, elaborate bishop robes and hats, statues, skulls, shields and a copy of the crown and the crown jewels.
We asked some people about the concert and found it had free admission and was on that evening. By this time it was getting late and we were getting hungry, so we walked down the stairs using the main entrance, which was magnificent and eventually found the pancake place recommended by the Lonely Planet Guide book.
When we got there the place was packed, but the service was quick, and soon we were next in line. We had a bit of trouble figuring out which pancake was which, because the menu and signs were all in Hungarian! Luckily there was a guy there who spoke English well, because he had lived and worked in Canada for a while. I ordered a chocolate one. The pancakes were lovely! After we finished, dad drew out some money from an ATM and we started walking back to the concert.
The concert was extremely good, even if we didn't understand any of the words! There were four opera singers (two women and two men) and a mixed choir. The concert went very late and by the time we got back to the campground we were all very tired!
I think Budapest was very beautiful, unfortunately we didn't end up going to Pest because there was a workers strike the next day. I'd like to visit there again someday, maybe see the parliament house.
World travel is a great activity to pursue at almost any age provided you are in proper health to handle the rigors of traveling.
