TRAVEL TO GRAZ
The family flew out of Africa from Johannesburg on the 18th of March. Mum, Rachel and Phoebe flew to London to see our friends there and to collect clothes and other things that we needed in Europe but had not needed to carry through Africa. Dad and I flew into Germany to collect the campervan. The girls had arranged cheap flights from London to Graz, in Austria, and we were to collect the van and take it to Graz to meet them.
When dad and I arrived at Frankfurt airport we went through immigration and collected our bags. Then we went through customs, which we were surprised to find was an unmanned passageway, and on to the train terminal, which was part of the same building.
All through the airport there were smokers spots every 100m or so. At these spots there were machines which sucked in the air around them and so cleared the smoke from cigarettes. They also had ashtrays for cigarette butts so people could smoke in the airport without annoying others.
At the station we bought something for breakfast. We had big salad rolls and hot jam donuts at a really reasonable price. After the food on offer in Africa I felt I back in civilization again.
We took the train to Stuttgart and from there organized tickets out to a town called Dettingen. At Dettingen is the McRent franchise from which we were collecting the campervan.
When we arrived at McRent we collected the vehicle. We were given a few campervan instruction books but they were of limited value as they were all in German! We left and drove around for a while to start to get used to the left-hand drive in the vehicle. That night we stayed on the hill overlooking the town and went back in the morning to check a few things about the functions of the campervan that we could not figure out.
We set off using the route we had chosen the night before after looking at a Germany - Austria map. We went south and past one of the big lakes, thinking that it may still be frozen as it was still mid-March. It was only partially frozen and just looked cold, dark and forbidding. I was glad we had been in African sunshine while Germany was in Winter. From there we went east to the mountains and through a snow covered pass between Germany and Austria.
In the mountains there was a lot of snow the snow. Even though it was melting, in some places the snow was still deeper than the van, and it is 3.3 meters high! The route we took was a truck route though it looked so thin that it could have been a one way street. It was scary to see large international tandem were overtaking and passing each other on that road.
We got into Salzburg that night and were advised to shop at the hypermarkets whenever possible. The camp owner also told us of one down the road.
The city itself was modern functioning city but clearly had strong influence from the past. The castle on the hill overlooking the city was used in the movie the Sound of Music but it was too smoggy to see the castle from where we were. When we drove around the city we realized that the street beside the river was the one used in the modern film, The Bourne Supremacy.
The next day we drove down the major highways to get to Graz, Austria. There were many tunnels and most were over a kilometer long. All of them were signposted with exactly how many meters long they were.
In Graz we found parking at the airport and waited until they arrived.
My overall impression of the roads in Germany and Austria were that the highways and national routes were quite good but the truck routes, while being adequate, could be a bit narrow.
Traveling around the world is a great activity to pursue at almost any age provided you are in proper health to handle the rigors of international student travel.

Sometimes, the demands of modern life seem to require an endless supply of energy. It’s hard enough just trying to squeeze everything in, then finding the energy to actually do everything presents a whole other obstacle. Are *YOU* low on natural energy?
When it comes to maintaining your good health, even when we try to eat well, we're still disadvantaged…
The nutritional content of most food has been compromised over the years, not only by deficient soils and modern production, transportation, storage and processing methods, but also by the enormous amounts of chemical and artificial substances added to promote growth, storage life, taste and appearance.
It's for this reason that more and more medical authorities are advocating the use of vitamin and mineral supplements. However, finding them in the right combination can be both confusing and costly.
The best nutrition products I know of make use of knowledge gained from the botanical world's 6,000 year history. They incorporated health building nutritional herbs with the best modern technology to help our bodies cleanse and detoxify so that the cells - the tiniest living units - can be as fully nourished as possible.
This allows the cells to grow, repair and to perform their functions with the best possible efficiency so that we feel and look better and are more able to prevent and fight disease. Once the body begins to clear itself of toxins it can more efficiently absorb nutrition.
