Strengthen Your Health by Simply Changing Which Foods You Eat First

Did you know the order in which you eat your food at a meal can influence your well-being? Surprisingly, which foods you eat first can affect blood sugar, energy levels, and other health factors.

Who knew? There really is a good reason for eating your dessert last, and it isn't because your mom just wanted you to leave room in your stomach for the more important foods.

Putting the topic of dessert aside, you can strengthen your health by eating the foods in the main part of your meal in a certain order, too.

Consider this interesting study:

1. Background. A study from the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York focused on the order of food.

* Researchers gave the test subjects meals with the same foods, but in different orders.

* They tracked the impact of the meals on their blood sugar levels. They wanted to know if the order of the food as it was eaten would affect these levels.

* The test subjects had diabetes, but researchers mention the results can be useful for anyone who is interested in controlling blood sugar.

2. Meals. The meals consisted of bread, orange juice, chicken, salad, broccoli, and dressing.

* The food was the same throughout the study. The only difference was the order in which it was eaten.

* At each meal, each of the participants ate all of the food on their plate, so that the amount of food they consumed would be the same for each person.

* Afterward, the researchers measured the blood sugar level of each participant.

3. Study results. Blood sugar levels were lower in participants who ate the protein portion of the meal first.

* The study participants who had the chicken and salad first had lower insulin and glucose measurements.

* The study participants who ate the bread and orange juice first had higher levels.

Using the Results

Researchers hope that the study helps people understand how to organize their meals. You can start applying the study results to your own meals, whether you're at home, work, or out at a restaurant.

It's easy to eat your food in a different order:

* You simply eat the protein and vegetables first.

* Then, finish off by eating the carbohydrates and fruits. Although the study used orange juice, any drink with high levels of sugar can have a similar impact on your blood sugar levels.

Food Combinations

It's important to combine the foods on your plate for maximum nutrition and calories. You also want to choose food that doesn't raise your blood sugar to dangerous levels.

Researchers recommend the combination of protein with carbohydrates in one meal. This combination will help maintain your blood sugar levels and prevent dangerous spikes.

Choose from these options for each meal:

* Include lean proteins and healthy fats, as these are important for your body.

* Limit starchy vegetables because they can raise your blood sugar to higher levels.

* Low-carbohydrate options are an important part of your meals as well.

It's important to evaluate the food on your plate before you eat it. Ensure that you've included various food groups, including both protein and carbohydrates, at each meal. The order in which you eat each food has a dramatic impact on your health.

The Elimination Diet: Find the Foods That Disagree With You

There’s a good chance that you’re regularly eating something that doesn’t agree with you. It might be making you tired, paranoid, or hurt your ability to concentrate. Each time you put food into your body, it can have a negative effect on your mind or body.

Everyone is different, so there are no hard and fast rules. You’ll have to be a bit of a detective to find the culprits.

Everyone should give an elimination diet a try. You might feel a lot worse than you think. If you’ve been eating the wrong foods your entire life, you don’t know any differently.

Greater health, energy, and mental clarity might be as easy as eliminating a couple of foods from your diet. It’s definitely worth the time and effort.

Try these ideas to find the foods that are causing more harm than good:

1. Avoid the most common culprits for three weeks. These include dairy, soy, gluten, nuts, and eggs. Some people also have issues with alcohol or artificial sweeteners. It’s up to you to determine how far you want to take it. If you’re wondering what you can eat, there are still quite a few options:

◦ Unprocessed meat, vegetables, fruit, non-gluten grains, and beans, to name a few.

2. After three weeks, document how you feel. Three weeks is the magic number. That’s how long it takes the antibodies your body has produced to expire. So, after three weeks, measure how well you feel. Assign a 1-10 value for the following items:

◦ Energy
◦ Mood
◦ Sleep quality
◦ Ability to focus
◦ Mental clarity

3. Add one food back into your diet at a time. Now, just pick one of the foods you’ve been avoiding and eat it. Just eat it at one meal and note how you feel over the next 48 hours. If you still feel good, eat it one more time. Remember to measure how you feel.

4. If you had a reaction, drop that food and continue until you feel better. Avoid adding another food until you’ve recovered from the previous one. A few days is usually sufficient. Now you know that you should stay away from that food over the long term.

◦ Negative foods can cause fatigue, grumpiness or depression, insomnia, mental fog, or altered thinking. In addition, you might experience bowel discomfort or diarrhea.

5. Repeat the process of adding foods back into your diet. Keeping adding foods back into your diet, one at a time, and see what happens. Always record how you feel after eating it. Keep a log just for your elimination diet. This might be the most important journal you ever keep.

6. If you want to get fancy, check your pulse and blood pressure. Just before you’re about to add a new food, take your pulse and blood pressure. Then, eat the food and check both again. Any food that alters either significantly probably isn’t good for you.

If you’ve never tried an elimination diet, you owe it to yourself to go through the process. Many people have a food or two that’s making life much more challenging than it needs to be. The wrong food can affect your digestion, skin, mood, mental clarity, focus, energy, and sleep.

If you’ve been struggling with life, a big part of the solution could be an elimination diet. Give it a try and see what you find out. Experiment on yourself. It’s the only way to know for certain. It might seem like a daunting task, but after just a few weeks you might find a way to improve your life dramatically.
