Reflux Disease Diet

When you begin to suffer from heartburn, you might be shocked at the time and cause of the symptoms. Many people assume only highly acidic meals can result in the nagging chest pain and esophageal burning that creeps up, but that’s not necessarily true.

When your doctor first diagnoses you with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), he or she will likely recommend that you start with making lifestyle changes. This will be a first step before medication and possible surgery take place.

The lifestyle changes will probably have to be in place even if you do go the medication or surgical route, but you might be able to stave those options off with simple dietary alterations.

The first thing you need to do is become aware of causes – because everyone reacts to foods and beverages differently. Keep a little journal that tracks the times you ate, the portions you consumed, and what you ate.

There are some simple changes that your physician will probably have you make in regards to food consumption. Start with the size of your meals. Smaller, more frequent meals are much better for treating GERD than large, heavy meals. You want the pressure in your stomach to be lessened, so don’t fill it up to the brim with food.

Another thing to watch is how calorie heavy your meals are. One of the contributing factors to having reflux disease is obesity, so if you eat meals high in calories and continue packing on weight, the GERD will get worse.

Watch the fat intake, too. Usually, if you’re watching calories, this will go right along with that – but high fat meals (like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, for example), cause the food to remain in your stomach longer, which increases the possibility that it will travel back up the esophagus and into your throat and mouth, causing symptoms such as chest pain and a sour taste.

There are some foods that those who suffer from GERD report usually cause their symptoms to flare up, like anything with tomatoes. Alcohol is one of the beverages that can cause pain. That nightly glass of wine may have to be eliminated – or at the very least, consumed much earlier before bedtime.

Coffee is another culprit in the case of causing GERD. Even without caffeine, it sometimes results in food making its way back up the throat, carrying stomach acid along with it. Other drinks to avoid are citrus (high acid) drinks like orange juice, along with carbonated drinks.

Unfortunately for many, chocolate might be the root cause of their discomfort – especially if you have a habit of ingesting a little dessert after dinner, right before bedtime. The same goes for after dinner mints – they help GERD spiral out of control.
