Post Partum Depression

Post partum depression is a type of depression that a woman can suffer during pregnancy or just after childbirth. In some cases a woman may begin to suffer from post partum as much as 18 months after the birth of their child.

It is believed that up to 70% of women who have had children will have suffered from some type of post partum depression, with some cases being very mild and others quite severe. Some women might only suffer from post partum depression for a few days while for others it can last much longer and may require treatment.

Symptoms of post partum depression might include:

• Feeling constantly sad
• Irritable
• Easily upset
• Unable to concentrate
• Difficulty sleeping
• Headaches
• Loss of interest in daily activities.

The main difference with post partum depression and other types of depression is the timing, in that is surfaces either while pregnant or after giving birth. It is thought that women who have a low self esteem are at a higher risk of developing post partum depression.

Other factors that might cause post partum depression are hormone changes, past history of depression, or being a single mother without any support. Although having a baby is a very happy and beautiful time in a woman’s life it is also a very difficult time and even more so without the support of the child’s father.

Having post partum depression can be extremely difficult for a woman to accept, when they should be experiencing the most precious moments of life and are instead feeling sad and depressed. Women may even start to doubt themselves as a good mother and feel that they don’t deserve to be a mother. These thoughts can all make depression much worse and difficult to overcome.

Having a baby is a major lifestyle change and no matter how much you prepare for motherhood the changes are still huge and can be incredibly difficult to adjust to. Being a mother is exhausting and the lack of sleep itself can be a contributing factor of depression. Then there is the responsibility of this whole new life that you have produced and that responsibility can be overwhelming.

Being a mother is the best job in the world but it is also the hardest job in the world, and don’t let anyone tell you any different. Post partum depression is very common and it certainly doesn’t mean that you are a bad mother; it just means that you are human!
