Today I want to reflect a little on what we have been through over the last couple of years and what we might be doing in the future – the old ‘looking back, looking forward ‘exercise.

In my own case, after school and deferring a university position to think about options, I made the decision that I wanted to work for myself and came back to my little country town to work in our family’s photography business.

My father was not well so I was quickly doing everything, working in photographic retail and as a wedding/portrait/commercial photographer for the next 15 years.

What has that to do with health and nutrition you say?

Actually, quite a lot for me.

Technology changes and I could see that digital photography was going to be a major disrupter for my business.

I was doing additional things to add separate income streams beside the photography when a mate told me to use nutritional products from the largest weight loss/nutrition company and to work with him.

I had little interest in nutrition.
I was training martial arts having reached blackbelt level, didn’t need to lose weight.
I thought I was very healthy, even though I was tired all the time.
Tired comes from working too hard and having young children at home, of course.
Surely, being tired all the time was just a function of working too hard,… wasn’t it??

This guy had been very successful and then spectacularly unsuccessful.
He had used herbal nutrition to repair his health and then worked in the nutrition business because he could see how much people needed something to balance their nutrition and wellness.
He was very successful.

When I started to use the herbs, I had little result for a couple of weeks.
I realised later that I had a manageable form of chronic fatigue syndrome.
Sticking with the herbs for a little over a month I woke up one day with more energy than I could ever remember having.
Clear head, no afternoon energy drop out, dramatically increased stamina.
You could say it was lifechanging.

I began working with the nutrition company through their direct distribution structure and others joined me.

Within 12 months I was earning more from the sales and marketing in nutrition than my business was producing, and I gave my business to my staff and moved over to nutrition full time before the effects of digital photography really set it.

That was 30 years ago.
I am still using the herbs every day and the financial benefits of working in the industry has given financial stability.

I look at the people in my little town who I have know since childhood and am often amazed at how old they seem to have become.
The health problems they have seem to me to validate all the rhetoric I heard from the nutritional doctors way back in the 1990’s.

Interesting.
I thought at the time that it would take decades before I would really know if the herbs and the nutrition really worked but, here we are. I turned 66 last birthday.

I’ve just taken on another financial project which I find interesting and which I will be working with for the next 10 years.
We are lodging draft plans with the local council for a 65 sq meter extension to our house that I plan to owner-build.
There is a 2 year project beside everything else.

My point here is that getting nutrition and health factors right is something that plays into lifestyle for your entire life.
As Jim Rohn used to say, some things are easy to do but they are also easy not to do.
30 years of a nutrition shake every day is something that has become so normal that my wife and I don’t seems to notice it, we just do it.

If you are thinking about adjusting your own diet and lifestyle this insight might be an incentive to get started.
Looking forward it may be a little daunting, but I can promise you that looking back on it you will be glad that you made the effort.

21st Century Tea

There are so many ways that our immune systems can be overwhelmed ... it's in our air, our water, our food, our workplace, our stress. This blend of organic and wild herbs is not only helpful but comforting, strengthening and tasty.

1 part red clover blossoms
1 part nettle leaves
1 part pau d'Arco
1 part alfalfa & sage leaves
1 part St.Johns wort tops
1 part ginger root

Place all herbs in a tea ball or bag, put in your nicest or most favorite cup or mug, and cover with boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes.

Remove tea ball or bag, and add sugar, honey, sweetener, milk, cream or whatever, to taste.

ADD/ADHD Remetea

1Teaspoon Hops
1 Teaspoon Gotu Kola

Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil. Place the herbs inside, place lid on tightly and let it steep for 5 minutes. Drink twice a day.

After Dinner Carminative Tea

1 cup water
1 tablespoon fennel seeds

Bring the water and fennel seeds to a boil with the lid on the pan and let sit for 15 minutes and enjoy this calming cup of tea.

Fennel is a wonderful herb for digestion and can help your body increase its ability to digest a big meal or a meal with lots of fat

A Bath For Emotional Balance

1/2 c Dried orange peel *OR* 1/2 Whole fresh orange; sliced
3 tb Dried jasmine flowers
2 tb Dried sandalwood chips
When everything seems just a bit too overwhelming, a bath can be extremely good medicine. This season, you might appreciate herbal remedies for feelings like nervousness, tension, anxiety or emotional fatigue. Try whole herbs like chamomile, jasmine, juniper, lavender, orange, rose, rosemary or sandalwood.
For a bath that'll restore your sense of balance, make an infusion of the listed herbs; sit back and enjoy.

A Bath To Help Varicose Veins

2 tb Dried ginger powder *OR* 4 tb Fresh gingerroot; chopped
4 tb Dried juniper
2 tb Dried rosemary
4 tb Dried lemon peel *OR* 1 Whole lemon; quartered
Although most often associated with women, bulging, enlarged veins can be a problem for both sexes.
The condition is largely hereditary, but a case of varicose veins can be made worse by had habits; standing for long periods of time, wearing tight clothing, and sitting with the legs crossed. Hormonal fluctuations also can contribute to varicosity.
Herbal baths can help, although you should be careful not to take baths that are too hot (extreme temperatures can exacerbate the problem). Whole herbs that you can use in a bath to help boost circulation in the legs include geranium, ginger, juniper, lemon, peppermint and rosemary.

A Sleep Inducing Bath

4 tb Dried chamomile
3 tb Dried lemon balm
2 tb Dried passionflower
1 tb Dried valerian
If you're feeling agitated at bedtime, the right herbal combination can help you drift right off into the REM stage.
Herbs that you might use in a bedtime bath include chamomile, hops, lavender, lemon balm, marjoram, passionflower, sandalwood and valerian.

Bath Bag

1 7 inch square piece of muslin or other light fabric
12 Inch lenght of ribbon
1 c Potpourri
Make a potpourri of equal amounts of comfrey and chamomile.
Place the potpourri in the center of the fabric square. Gather all edges of fabric over the potpourri and tie with ribbon or string.

"Basic Weight Management Strategy"


The perfect diet should be combined with a healthy weight management or activity program. Weight management may conjure up that dreaded “exercise” word.

And exercise to some means pushing the body beyond limits, experiencing painful in joints, muscles, bones - everywhere. No pain no gain, right? Wrong. Instead, replace the word “exercise” with “activity” and incorporate this in your daily routine.

And a general rule of thumb for guidelines about “activity” would be to strive for a minimum of 30 minutes for adults or 60 minutes for children of moderate physical activity daily.

Individual activity goals depend upon each person’s health and weight goals and issues. Begin by checking with your medical advisor or healthcare physician to get a green light on which activities would be suitable for you, what your target weight range should be and a strategic plan to improve your health.

In a nutshell, during activities, calories are burned, pounds are shed in the long run. And the number of calories burned depends upon the duration and intensity or the activity. Slow and steady is the rule of thumb. And note daily progress.

For those who have never been very active at all, it may be advisable to begin slow like with walking 10 minutes each day, gradually building up time and distance with increased “brisk” pacing.

Even if you can’t get out to walk, bike or swim, take stairs instead of elevators and escalators.

Clean your house. Clean your car. Wash windows. Wash your dog.

Check out exercise videos, cassettes and workout books from the public library and put some of their ideas into action.

Check out your local fitness centers, YMCA, community center, too, for ideas. Partner up with a neighbor to walk or join a community volleyball team.

There are unlimited ways to be active and enjoy life at the same time without using painful weight loss strategies.

What are the Calories in food?

Understanding Your Weight

A pound of fat represents approximately 3500 calories of stored energy. In order to lose a pound of fat, you have to use 3500 more calories than you consume.

Although this seems like a simple formula remember that your body is a thinking organism designed to protect itself.

If you were to try to reduce your intake by the entire 3500 calories in one day, your body would register some type of alarm and think that there is a state of emergency. Immediately your metabolism would slow down and no weight loss would be achieved.

It's better to spread your weight loss out over a period of a week, so that you aim to reduce your caloric intake by 3500 to 7000 calories per week, resulting in weight loss of one to two pounds per week.

It's generally not recommended to try to lose more than two pounds in a week. Attempting to do so may cause health risks, and on top of this you're unlikely to be successful.

In the example of attempting to lose two pounds per week, you can use a basic method of calorie counting to help you accomplish your goal.

To do so, you need to figure out how many calories a person of your age, sex, and weight usually needs in a day, subtract 500 from that amount, and follow a diet that provides you with that many calories.

For example, if you would ordinarily need 3000 calories in a day, you would follow a 2500-calorie a day diet. Next, figure out how much exercise a person of your weight would need to do to burn 500 calories per day, and engage in an exercise plan that will help you achieve your goal.

The result is simple: 500 fewer calories consumed and 500 more calories expended equals a 1000 calorie per day deficit, which, over the course of a week adds up to 7000 calories, or two pounds.

Although individual results may vary, the bottom line is if your body is consuming fewer calories than it's expending, then weight will be lost.

How To Calculate Your Needs

In order to eat fewer calories than you need, you have to determine how many calories you actually need. Adults can calculate their approximate energy needs using the following formula:

A. Body weight multiplied by 12 (for men) or 11 (for women) e.g., 150 lbs. x 12 = 1800

B. Activity One third body weight multiplied by the number of hours you don't sleep, typically 16 hours 150 lbs. x 1/3 = 50 x 16 = 800

C. Required Calories A + B 1800 + 800 = 2600

Thus, we determine that a 150-pound man requires approximately 2600 calories per day. The "Basal Metabolic Rate" is the number of calories a man of that weight would burn just to keep the heart beating, the lungs pumping, etc. You would just burn your basal metabolic rate worth of calories if you slept all day.

Thus the "Activity" calculation is approximately the amount of calories a person would expend by spending his or her whole day sitting around. If you are engaging in activities other than sitting all day, you can increase your activity hours by the number of hours you are actually active.

Adult females can calculate their approximate energy needs using the same formula, except that the "Basal Metabolic Rate" is determined by multiplying body weight times 11 instead of 12.

Children and teenagers require more calories by body weight, but the amount varies by age and by individual child.

It is best to consult a physician before altering a child’s diet, however activity and exercise increases won’t hurt the average youth of today, and will show some benefits of controlling obesity.

Overall, this gives you a general idea of what a calorie is, how it relates to weight, and how the body turns calories into fat. This is not of course a complete diet plan.

However understanding your body is a definite prerequisite to making the changes necessary to conquer obesity.

Your calorie intake

For example: If you were an adult male eating 3,500 calories per day you can drop 250 calories from your diet and increase your energy consumption from exercise by 250 calories.

If you can do this everyday, you will create a 3,500-calorie deficiency over the entire week – and that is the equivalent of one fat pound.

In order to lose weight you need to find a 500-calorie deficiency everyday. Do it through exercise AND reducing what you eat.

Minimum Calorie Intakes

Women should not consume less than 1,200 calories per day, or 1,000 less than your maintenance value (how many calories you need to keep your weight steady). The Harris-Benedict formula is one of the leading ways to calculate your maintenance value.

Men should not consume less than 1,800 calories per day, or 1,000 less than your maintenance value.

If you try a crash diet, where you are only consuming 1,000 calories per day and working out, or getting exercise, sure, you will lose weight.

But, it isn’t going to stay off. When you don’t give your body enough fuel, it starts to consume the muscles in your body. As we learned earlier, the muscles are an important part of being able to metabolize your foods.

Hearty laughter offers many of the same benefits as gentle exercise. Laughing exercises the facial muscles, shoulders, diaphragm, and abdomen.

Laughter also decreases anxiety and stress and can improve our outlook on life, which is very useful when we get sick. Research shows that laughter may also boost endorphin levels, increase circulation, and enhance immune activity.

All of us laugh at certain times throughout each day, but we can increase laughter's benefits by consciously choosing to laugh more often. Doing so requires commitment and a willingness to cultivate a sense of optimism and humor, however.

Like any skill, learning to become a conscious laugher takes practice, but when you find yourself laughing throughout the day, you can be sure that you are increasingly becoming healthier in every area of your life.

Maybe this will explain.

When you are very busy, but still want to keep in touch, guess what you do?

... You forward jokes.

When you have nothing to say, but still want to keep contact, you forward jokes.

When you have something to say, but don't know what, and don't know how,

A guy named Joe finds himself in dire circumstances. His business has gone bust and he's in serious financial trouble. He's so desperate that he decides to ask God for help. He begins to pray...
