What is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure is also referred to as hypertension. It is a condition characterized by the blood vessel pressure getting higher than normal. Hypertension is exactly the opposite of hypotension which means low blood pressure. High blood pressure is categorized as primary and secondary. Primary hypertension is not characterized by any special symptoms.

However, secondary hypertension is caused by a disease of the heart, kidneys, artery or endocrine system, so it is more likely to be detected as the patient experiences other disturbing symptoms. If you do not control your high blood pressure, there are higher chances that you might suffer from severe health issues later on.

Chronic high blood pressure in the blood vessels may lead to cardiac diseases, stroke, arterial aneurysm, kidney failure and cardiovascular disorders. It is present in several forms, but the symptoms are not seen immediately.

They may not be observed until the condition gets severe. Hypertension is commonly seen in adults. It occurs when there is a lot of pressure put on the walls of the blood vessels. It may develop into a serious health condition that may have bad effects on the kidneys, eyes and the heart.

Some of the common causes of hypertension are high salt consumption, inactive lifestyle, visceral obesity, stress, alcohol consumption, vitamin D and potassium deficiency.

These factors increase the risk of hypertension. The risk is also increased by some inherited genetic mutations and with aging.

Severe hypertension is due to a specific cause that has to be studied thoroughly, since the condition has to be treated appropriately. Some of the common causes of severe hypertension include preeclampsia during pregnancy, metabolic disorder, kidney diseases and intake of illegal drugs.

The common symptoms include vomiting, headache, confusion, nausea, drowsiness and vision problems. Children may also be at risk of hypertension. Their symptoms include problems with growth, seizures, difficulty breathing, lack of energy and irritability. High blood pressure in children leads to nose bleeds, headaches, facial paralysis and blurred vision.

Some important tips to prevent high blood pressure levels are to follow a proper diet, to reduce your intake of sugar and sodium, to say no to alcohol and tobacco, to exercise regularly and to lose weight. The treatment of hypertension differs from one person to another based on the patient's individual health history and current health condition.

Some changes in your lifestyle can help you lower the high blood pressure levels. This is a very serious disorder and so should be taken seriously. One should follow the treatment course suggested by their doctor.
