About Aging and Depression


As you get older, there are many things that can cause aging and depression. The good news is that you don’t have to accept that depression is going to be your way of life forever. There’s much you can do to feel good again.

One of the most common causes of depression in older adults is loneliness and isolation. You may have lost many friends and family members in your later years and this can make you feel alone.

Poor health can also cause you to become isolated in your home or even in a facility.

Chronic illness is another problem that can cause depression. This isn’t a problem that is associated only with aging and depression, but with anyone of any age that has problems with chronic disease.

It can be hard to feel bad all the time and to not be able to do the things you once enjoyed. But you don’t need to feel alone in your situation.

There’s a great deal of support available to you so that you can feel better.

Sometimes depression comes from chemical imbalances in the brain that are not really related to aging, but to other issues.

But even in this case there’s often help available to you so that you don’t have to continue feeling depressed.

What can you do to feel better and get relief from depression? There are many possibilities.

First, if you think that isolation is the cause of your feelings, it’s time to add more social activity to your life.

There are many ways you can do this. Many senior centers offer activities that will allow you to spend time with others who share similar interests.

Most of these activities are offered free of charge or for a very low cost.

You may also consider taking on a volunteer job. Aging doesn’t mean that you don’t have anything left to offer.

In fact, your age can actually make you much more valuable because of your experience and wisdom.

Try volunteering at a local hospital, museum, zoo, children’s home, nursing home, animal shelter, or any other place that has activities you’d enjoy.

Not only will you enjoy being around people, but you’ll also benefit those in need.

Chronic illness presents a different type of challenge. Talk with your healthcare provider to see if he or she knows of any support groups available in your area.

You may also want to look for online groups. These are especially helpful it it’s difficult for you to leave your home.

If you feel depressed, but you’re not sure what is causing it you should always speak with your healthcare provider.

You may benefit from medications and supplements to help ease depression.

You may also want to consider alternative treatment such as acupuncture, massage, and reflexology to improve your mood.

Aging and depression don’t have to go hand in hand when you work to stay healthy.
