A Stroke Is Often Treatable
While a stroke can cause sudden fatality, a stroke is often treatable if you get help immediately. Studies have shown that patients that get treated for stroke within the first three hours of the attack can have good results. Back to Top of your health online page
Strokes can have two causes – blood clots and hemorrhages. The type of stroke that results from a blood clot can be treated medically in a couple of different ways. First, thrombolytic medications can be administered.
Thrombolytic is the scientific term for blood thinning drugs. These medications work to dissolve blood clots so that blood flow can be restored to the brain.
This is the fastest and easiest way to treat stroke, but must be administered right away.
Other procedures involve suctioning the blood clot from the affected area to restore blood flow. There’s also a procedure that involves wrapping a coil around the blood clot and then removing it from the blood vessel.
These treatments are more invasive and usually used after the three hour window has passed.
For a hemorrhagic stroke, surgery will likely be required in order to repair blood vessels that are leaking into the brain and clean the area where the hemorrhage occurred.
Medical measures are often required to prevent life-threatening complications from stroke.
Once the life-threatening stage of a stroke has passed, treatment will be focused on the damage done by the stroke.
Strokes have a wide range of effects from mild to severe. While some people don’t have major changes to deal with, others are left with life altering problems.
Effects such as paralysis, muscle weakness, and speech abnormalities often require extensive physical therapy or speech therapy in order to rehabilitate. The length of treatment will depend on the severity of the stroke.
Stroke rehabilitation can be difficult on the emotions of both the patient and the family. It may be helpful to join a support group for others dealing with life after a stroke. One-on-one counseling can also be valuable in working through the emotions surrounding a stroke.
It will also be important to pay attention to stroke risk factors in order to prevent another stroke.
At this point it’s important to focus on lifestyle changes you can make to prevent a second incidence. Make sure to take any medication that’s prescribed by your physician.
In addition, keep track of lifestyle factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. If you’re a smoker, your best option is to quit. Talk with your healthcare provider about any other lifestyle factors that you may need to address.
A stroke is often treatable if treatment is received at early onset and rehabilitation can help you to regain your strength.
