It is May already!!
2025 is moving on and we are almost at mid-year!!

At the start of this year I talked about changes to daily activities which would effect health and fitness in the long term, without creating much drama in the short term.
We all know that you get nothing for nothing, but I wanted to see how small changes could make measurable different to life and lifestyle over time.

Like most New Year resolutions and commitments, mine have not lasted consistently, but the beauty of setting up a pattern of small changes is that you can be really strict this month, inattentive next month, get back on track the month after, and still keep making progress.

I was taught a long time ago that one of the secrets of long term achievement is to reflect and measure.
Have you made measurable progress over measurable time?
If you can answer a truthfully, yes, to that then you are moving in the right direction.

When I review, one of the activities I took on personally was stretching towards my toes, 3 times a day for 30 seconds.
Now, when I review, I find that I have no problem reaching to the ground to pick up dropped keys, or coins.
The reason for that activity is that I was finding I couldn’t reach things on the ground and I had been accepting that it was just from getting older, and not from neglecting needed exercise.
Change behaviour and achieve measurable progress.

I’d also committed to focusing on my Herbal.life shakes in the morning, trimming food intake during the day, not drinking sugar based soft drinks, avoiding chocolate most days, drinking more water.
With this slow-change process, I’ve not taken weight measurements.
I’m not looking at short term changes.
What I have noticed is that I have had to put 3 more holes in my belts!
A principle of weightloss is that if you are losing inches/centimetres then you are losing fat.
This process is a slow reshaping rather than a specific weight loss project.

There are other consideration but, overall. I’m happy with the progress in overall heath from this little lifestyle focus.
It feels like something that is easy to do and can be kept active in the long term.

Now those changes are in place, it’s time to review what comes next.

It seems to be a human trait to begin and finish projects on a specific date.
“I am making New Year resolutions!”
“I’ll begin on the first day of Spring!”
“I’ll lose 10kg before the wedding!”
“I’ll lose inches before summer starts so I can wear my swimming outfit!”
“This next year I'm going to make an extra payment on the loan each month and shorten the time it will take to pay it off!”

It makes sense to me to plan a start date as it means we have a bit of time to think about what we are trying to achieve, and about the reason we are doing it, and what the benefit can be if we start with a clear plan.

The month of May is a good time to begin thinking about a mid-year start to new plans.

Personally, there are few specific thing that are glaringly obvious as needing to be worked on.
The progress on the previous project is fine so recommitting to that will keep it ‘fresh’ and on-going.
Now is the time to build on that.

It is a good time to think about other things which are not a problem now, but may become a problem in the future if neglected.

In this newsletter we focus on health and wellness, but financial needs and goals have a huge impact on lifestyle, and they normally take long-term focus to make a real difference. It is definitely worth considering anything which will have a long-term impact on our lives.

It's a little early for mid- year projects but the 2025 is moving on and it will not be so very long before we are at Christmas and looking back on 2025 and considering what we’ve achieved.

Today I’m issuing myself a challenge, which you might like to take up yourself.
What goals or changes can be set to begin on 1 July, to work on through the second half of the year, which will make a difference to how life and how I feel at Christmas 2025?

Financial?
Spiritual?
Health?
Personal time?
Family and friends?
Sport or other activities?
What else?

There is no pressure for any sudden commitments.
No-one is watching.
What can we work on for ourselves that will make us feel better about our lives, in general, by the end of the year?

Interesting idea?

I’m going to ponder on it a little myself before adding new goals to my own list.

What Is Green Fitness?

Just as people have become conscious of their impact on the environment when it comes to shopping, eating, and keeping their home efficient there’s been a movement to make fitness green.

This type of fitness gets back to basics and allows you to get fit without taking away precious resources from the environment. There are many ways you can improve your fitness routine and go green.

One way to practice green fitness is to exercise outdoors. Instead of relying on a gym to provide a space, get back to nature. Walking, running, bicycling, hiking, and jogging are all activities that can be done outdoors.

Some fitness groups are offering outdoor classes so that you can experience classes such as yoga outdoors. If you enjoy having scheduled classes and exercising with a group this is a great option.

The aim of green fitness is to provide a total body fitness experience outside of the typical gym. Gyms often use a lot of resources with machines powered by electricity when the natural environment provides a better venue.

Frequently simple items such as ropes, jump ropes, tires, and free weights are used instead of expensive equipment. The idea is to keep the energy used that of your body.

Gyms are beginning to join the green fitness movement. They’re working to use renewable and recycled materials for their buildings, focusing on energy-efficient utilities, and purchasing machines that are green.

If you’re currently attending a gym, ask about what they’re doing to go green. Some gyms are adding recycling programs, purchasing new equipment manufactured to be green, and working to be energy efficient.

You can also join the green fitness movement by trying to make some substitutions. For example, use a bike to ride to work instead of driving. You can also walk to the store or to run errands instead of depending on vehicles.

There are a wide variety of options when it comes to green fitness. If you’re not ready to take the full plunge by leaving your gym, you can make adjustments to make your workout greener.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes Perfect to use with our convenient protein powder supplement to optimize your health!

DOUBLE MELON SMOOTHIE
1 1/2 cups seeded and chopped watermelon
1 1/2 cups seeded and chopped honeydew melon
Juice of 2 limes
1 cup vanilla low fat yogurt
1 cup ice cubes
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses.

EVERYTHING BUT THE KITCHEN SINK SMOOTHIE
2 bananas
1 orange
1 apple
2 chunks of fresh pineapple
2 kiwis
1/2 cups of frozen blueberries
10‐12 frozen strawberries
1‐2 cups cranberry juice
1 (14‐ounces) can eagle brand sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 (8‐ounces) carton plain yogurt
1 small banana, cut up
1 cup frozen or fresh whole strawberries
1 (8‐ounces) can crushed pineapple packed with juice, chilled
2 tablespoons real lemon juice from concentrate
1 cup ice cubes
Halved fresh strawberries, optional
Chill eagle brand. In blender container, combine eagle brand, yogurt, banana, whole strawberries, pineapple with its juice and real lemon, cover and blend until smooth.
With blender running, gradually add ice cubes, blending until smooth. Garnish with halved strawberries if desired. Serve immediately.

FLAXSEED SMOOTHIE
1 medium banana or fruit of choice
1/4 cups yogurt or tofu
1 to 2 tablespoons concentrated fruit juice
1/4 teaspoons vanilla
1/3 cups soy milk
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
1 tablespoon flaxseed meal
Dash cinnamon or mace
Blend all together until creamy smooth.

REPORT: What Are Autoimmune Diseases?

This month our new health guide on the site is to educate you about aspects of Autoimmune Diseases and their triggers and treatments.

Autoimmune diseases affect between 14 million and 20 million people in the United States, with many more at risk for developing an autoimmune disease.

Some sources even say as many as 50 million people are affected by it in the US alone.

Experts also note that the prevalence of autoimmunity has been on the rise.

Women are almost three times as likely to develop an this than men, making it a significant issue facing women’s health today.

In addition, certain communities such as Hispanic, Native American, and African Americans are more at risk for developing one.

There are 80 known autoimmune diseases that include well-known ones like diabetes 1 and rheumatoid arthritis, and lesser-known ones like Achalasia or Dressler’s Syndrome.

In this guide, we will look at what an autoimmune disease is, major types, common symptoms and causes, diagnosis, and available treatments.

What Is an Autoimmune Disease?

In a normal body, the immune system works to protect the body from disease and dangerous pathogens. For some people, though, this important system begins working against the body.

Instead of defending it, begins attacking cells, tissues, and organs of the body with antibodies.

Essentially the body starts to see normal parts of the body as threats it needs to eradicate.

Another way to understand autoimmunity is to compare it to an allergy.

When a person has an allergy, the body thinks that something is dangerous even when it’s not (like people who react to peanut butter or shellfish).

The difference between the two is instead of treating peanut butter like a dangerous invader, the immune system thinks of its own body’s tissue as the invader.

Quick History of Autoimmunity Disease Research

It wasn’t until the 1950s that doctors and scientists began to learn that autoimmune diseases existed.

While they knew things like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus were real diseases, they did not know what caused them.

In fact, predating this time some believed that the body could not attack itself.

Paul Ehrlich, a German physician and bacteriologist coined the term “horror autotoxicus” which meant “horror of self-toxicity.”

He theorized that a body would not attack itself because it was innately averse to self-harm.

However, with the discovery of the way the immune system reacted to allergens and anaphylaxis, scientists and doctors began to discover that the immune system may not always work in the appropriate way.

During this same time, Henry G. Kunkel, an American immunologist, began studying patients with Lupus and arthritis at Rockefeller Hospital.

According to Rockefeller University:

Using the newly developed tools of protein chemistry, Kunkel and his coworkers demonstrated that certain antibodies in the blood of people with rheumatoid arthritis reacted with other antibodies as if they were antigens (the rheumatoid factor).

When found in the synovial fluid of joints, the resulting complexes caused inflammation. Kunkel also discovered and characterized many autoantibodies in lupus.

This research showed that in some cases a body’s immune system could, and would, mistake good tissue as a foreign intruder and treat it as a threat.

What Is the Role of the Immune System?

When learning about autoimmune diseases, it’s helpful to first understand the role of a healthy immune system.

The immune system works by removing microbes that don’t belong in the body. When a germ or virus is introduced to the body, the immune system acts quickly to remove the threat.

The symptoms you experience when you’re sick are often the body’s way of removing the intruder.

For instance, when you have a fever, that’s the body’s way of making you inhospitable to the virus. A virus does not survive well with higher than normal temps or temps that fluctuate.

That’s why some people will recommend not using a fever reducer for a low-grade fever.

An immune system may also trigger a runny nose to help remove germs or viruses from the sinuses, and coughing and sneezing are meant to remove mucus that contains unhealthy microbes.

A properly working immune system helps fend off lots of germs, viruses, fungi, and other foreign pathogens even before they make us sick.

While we do get sick sometimes, there are a lot of sicknesses that are eradicated before we have any major symptoms.

The immune system is broken into two major parts that work closely together. These parts are:

● Innate immune system. This is your body’s first line of defense against foreign intruders. This immune response is triggered when you get a cut or initially contract a cold. The innate immune system responds the same way to all pathogens and its job is to keep things like bacteria from spreading through the body.

● Adaptive immune system. The second part is the adaptive immune system. If the innate immune system is not able to remove the foreign pathogen, the adaptive immune system steps in.

Its job is to identify and target the intruder. It even “remembers” foreign materials that it has come across before and the response time is faster the second time it’s introduced.

It’s also responsible for creating antibodies that attach to and neutralize the intruder.

When a person develops an autoimmune disease, the body uses these same defenses but begins to turn on itself.

The guards meant to protect the fort are instead attacking it. The dysfunctional immune system manifests in a number of different types of autoimmunity producing many different symptoms

Types of Autoimmune Diseases

There are over 80 identified autoimmune diseases, but many of them are rare.

Asherson’s Syndrome is an autoimmune disease that causes blood clotting in multiple organ systems. Though this disease is very serious, it’s also incredibly uncommon.

Only 300 people have been identified with this disease since 1992 when it was first discovered.

Mind and Body Combo Fitness

It was once thought that exercise only required the body to work. But as we begin to understand more about the connection between the mind and body, mind and body combo fitness has become popular.

Cy-yo is just one example of a fitness program that combines the work of mind and spirit with that of the body. There are several other combo programs that will help you to renew your spirit and strengthen your body.

Pilates in and of itself is a mind and body class. It focuses on small movements that relax the mind and body while helping you to build core strength. This is similar to yoga, but focuses on core strength.

Some types of yoga focus on strength as well as mind and body connection. For example, Bikram yoga which is done in a hot room and focus on flexing muscles. This combo class is very effective at improving your fitness level and reducing stress.

Pi-yo is another example and combines pilates with yoga. This is also called yogalates by some studios. Zumba is also considered a mind and body combo class.

It combines fun and dancing with a killer cardio workout that leaves your mind and body refreshed. Zumba has become so popular because it focuses on fun in combination with fitness.

Tai chi is another type of exercise that combines the mind and body. This is an Eastern practice that’s actually considered a martial art. It combines body movements with meditative practice and is a wonderful fitness activity for people of any age or fitness level.

Really any combination of exercises for the mind can be combined with fitness for the body. Gyms all over the world are offering classes that are combining two different types of practices.

The benefit of a mind and body combo class is that you get the best of both worlds. You’ll be able reduce the effect of stress on your body, experience renewed energy, and enjoy improved fitness.

Many studies have found that combining the mind and body can help you to actually attain better fitness than focusing only on the body while allowing your mind to wander.
