Hi,

We have a mixed bag for you today, from a look at thyroid issues to a review of how our brain is configured and functions, as well as some social things and light-hearted material.

Before we get started, I’ll comment again on the thought of mid-year resolutions that I mentioned last month.
The serious effort of New Year goals will sometimes last for less than a week but then sometimes, with focus, often last for 90 days or more.
Carrying resolutions though a year is a hard thing.

An old mentor of mine had a process of drawing a line under each month at the end.
Celebrate success, set aside failure, start again fresh.
It didn’t matter to him if it had been a good month or a bad month, when the new month started it was time to recommit, turn the page, begin again.

I find that can be a tiring thing to do.
Personally, if a month has gone well, then I believe there should be a short time to celebrate the success.
For longer term goals I personally find that I need more time to review and consider if things are working before resetting anything.
That is why I think a midyear review and reset makes sense.

Now we are approaching mid-year again and it’s time to focus a little more.
What is working well?
Are our plans giving measurable progress over measurable time, or have they slowed down and need review?
What has fallen away?
Do the things that have fallen away really matter or is it better to just let them go?
If we continue with the old ambitions does that make us feel good about ourselves, and about our progress, or should we put the old things aside and start again?

This whole process of setting goals, or ambitions, and then tracking progress, should be either about stretching ourselves to be better, or about protecting our future by taking steps now that will reap rewards as we age.

If we arbitrarily plan to review and reset at mid-year then we have one more month to mull over what matters:
Health?
Family?
Spiritual?
Fitness?
Financial?
Social?
Intellectual?

Focusing on things in the long term often brings good results.
The danger is in the things that are overlooked
Fit, healthy, making great money, is fantastic, but if being so busy means you have neglected family and friends and you find yourself isolated and alone then maybe other things should have been considered.

This is why I raised the question at the start of May rather than at the end of June.
For myself, I find if I ponder things for a while I find perspective changes and different priorities become clearer.
We have one more month till Mid-Year so, if you are thinking about review and reset, I wish you well in your quest.

Getting Tested for a Thyroid Disorder

Women are more likely to have thyroid disorders than men - but that doesn't mean that men are immune to them. And the older you get, the more likely it is that you'll end up with a thyroid disorder.

Testing is on-going once you've been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder because your doctor will need to know where your levels currently stand so he or she can adjust your medication properly.

The symptoms are so vague and common to other health situations that it's hard for your doctor to diagnose it without a firm test that proves whether you have a thyroid disorder or not.

This type of illness is often hereditary. It's important for you to find out if your parents or grandparents suffered from thyroid disorders. This will be a good indication of what's causing your symptoms.

The doctor will of course feel your neck for thyroid nodules but that alone won't deliver a full picture, so more tests need to be run at this point. The most common test is a simple blood test.

The blood test will measure the hormone levels (TSH) and looking at those numbers, the doctor can tell if your thyroid is performing up to standards, too low, or too much.

It's possible that your doctor will run more blood tests. This will let your doctor check for immune disorders that might be causing the situation in the first place. You don't get results back that day, but it doesn't take too long.

Another thing your physician might do is have you consume a capsule with radioactive iodine (known as radioiodine). If your thyroid accepts too much of the radioiodine, then you could be suffering from hyperthyroidism.

If it takes too small of an amount, then you may have hypothyroidism. An ultrasound or a scan can be used to rule out nodules and cancer.

Some doctors will perform a biopsy of your thyroid. Using a very small needle, the doctor inserts it into the thyroid after you've been given local anesthesia, to collect fluid and cells that a pathologist can examine so they can rule out thyroid cancer.

Healthy Smoothie Recipes Perfect to use with our convenient protein powder supplement to optimize your health!

FROZEN FRUIT SMOOTHIE
1/2 cups frozen bananas
1/2 cups frozen peaches
1/2 cups frozen strawberries
2 cups milk
1/4 cups orange juice
2 tablespoons honey
In a blender, combine all the above until smooth. Pour in tall glasses, pop a straw in and enjoy! Wonderful for those hot days in the summertime.

FRUIT COCKTAIL SMOOTHIE
8 ounces canned fruit cocktail, chilled
1 cup milk
1/4 cups nonfat dry milk powder
1/2 teaspoons vanilla
1/2 cups ice cubes
2 dashes ground cinnamon
In a blender container combine undrained fruit cocktail and remaining ingredients. Cover, blend till combined.
Add ice cubes, cover and blend till smooth. Sprinkle with additional cinnamon (for garnish) if desired. Serve immediately.

FRUIT SALAD SMOOTHIE
1 medium ripe peach
3/4 cups fresh or frozen strawberries
1/2 banana ‐‐ peeled
2 cups skimmed evaporated milk ‐chilled
4 teaspoons frozen orange juice concentrate
1 teaspoon vanilla
4‐6 ice cubes
Cinnamon ‐‐ optional
Combine everything in blender except ice and cinnamon. With blender running, add ice cubes one at a time.
Divide smoothie into 4 chilled glasses and sprinkle with cinnamon.

It may seem obvious what the brain does, but this three-pound organ is responsible for so much. In this section, you’ll discover some of the amazing and fascinating functions of the brain and how it works.

What Does the Brain Do?

At a glance, here are some of the main things the brain is responsible for:

Parts of the Brain

The brain is made up of different parts, and each is responsible for different functions.

There are three major parts of the brain:

● Cerebrum

● Cerebellum

● Brainstem

The cerebrum makes up the largest part of the brain. It includes the right and left hemispheres and is responsible for speech, reasoning, emotions, learning, and fine motor movements.

It also interprets information received from the five senses.

The cerebellum is located at the back of the brain under the cerebrum.

It deals with voluntary muscle movement, balance, and coordination. It also helps maintain posture.

The brainstem connects the brain to the body through the spinal cord.

The brainstem controls automatic functions like breathing, heart rate, body temperature, digestion, swallowing, sleep cycles, and more.

What Are Gray Matter And White Matter?

Most of us aren’t brain experts, but we often hear terms used to explain how the brain functions. Two of those terms are gray matter and white matter.

You may know that gray and white matter are important to the brain, but you may not know what they are or why they matter.

White matter is the part of the brain and spinal cord responsible for communicating information to different parts of the brain (in the gray matter areas).

This part of the brain is sheathed in a white fatty protein called myelin, hence the name “white matter.”

Gray matter is the part of the brain where things are processed. Gray matter is essential to sensory activity, higher learning, memory, thought, motor control, coordination, and more.

Although the brain has more white matter, gray matter uses about 94% of the oxygen used by the brain.

Why Do People Talk About the Right And Left Sides Of The Brain?

The brain has two major hemispheres: the right and left. Bundles of nerve fibers connect these two sides. Each side of the brain is responsible for different thinking and cognitive skills.

It’s believed that the right side of the brain is responsible for:

● Intuitive thoughts

● Random sequencing

● Creativity

● Emotional thought

● Non-verbal

● Imagination

● Adventurous impulses

● Music awareness

The left side of the brain is thought to provide:

● Analytical thoughts

● Attention to detail

● Ordered sequencing

● Logic

● Science and math

● Number skills

● Language

The left side of the brain controls the motor skills of the right side of the body, and the right side controls the motor skills of the left side.

It has long been thought that people are left or right-brain dominant.

For instance, people who are good at arts and creativity would be considered “right-brained,” and those who are drawn to logic, math, and reason would be considered “left-brained.”

Several studies have been conducted to see whether people use one side of their brain more than the other and if this shows up in their personality and interests.

So far, according to brain scans, this has proved to be something of a myth.

According to a 2013 study entitled “An Evaluation of the Left-Brain vs. Right-Brain Hypothesis:”

It has been conjectured that individuals may be left-brain dominant or right-brain dominant based on personality and cognitive style, but neuroimaging data has not provided clear evidence whether such phenotypic differences in the strength of left-dominant or right-dominant networks exist.

Studies also show that the left and right sides of the brain work in collaboration.

Carl Zimmer, a science writer for Discover magazine, explains it this way:

The pop psychology notion of a left brain and a right brain doesn’t capture their intimate working relationship. The left hemisphere specializes in picking out the sounds that form words and working out the syntax of the phrase, for example, but it does not have a monopoly on language processing.

The right hemisphere is more sensitive to the emotional features of language, tuning in to the slow rhythms of speech that carry intonation and stress.

Common Brain Conditions

The brain has nearly limitless capacity, is faster than a computer, and has more potential than we can imagine.

But this organ can also be fragile, and there are multiple things, including injury and disease, that can affect how well it functions.

Many conditions can negatively affect the brain, but some of the most common include:

● Brain injuries

● Cerebrovascular injuries like strokes and aneurysms

● Brain tumors

● Neurodegenerative disorders like dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, or Multiple Sclerosis

● Other neurological disorders, such as headaches, seizures, and vertigo

● Psychological conditions that might include anxiety, depression, bipolar, post-traumatic stress disorder, or schizophrenia

● Infections like meningitis Brain Injuries

A person experiencing a brain injury may have symptoms that include:

● Nausea or vomiting

● Confused or disoriented

● Dizziness

● Headache

● Loss of consciousness

● Convulsions or seizures

● Clear fluid draining from nose or ears

● Speech problems or slurring speech

● Unusual sleep patterns

● Dilation of one or both pupils

● Drowsiness

● Blurred vision

● Ringing in the ears

● Memory problems or trouble concentrating

If things get any better, I may have to hire someone to help me enjoy it.

I’m ’bout ... as Nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Busy as a moth in a mitten. Happy as a clam at high tide.

Advice for Northerners moving to the South: Save all manner of bacon grease. You will be instructed on how to use it shortly.

Just because you can drive on snow and ice does not mean Southerners can. Stay home the two days of the year it snows.

If you DO run your car into a ditch, don’t panic. Four men in the cab of a four-wheel pick-up with a 12-pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly. Don’t try to help them. Just stay out of their way. This is what they live for.

You can ask Southerners for directions, but unless you already know the positions of key hills, trees and rocks, you’re better off trying to find it yourself.

Remember: Y’all is singular. All y’all is plural. All y’all’s is plural possessive.

Get used to hearing, “You ain’t from around here, are you?”

Don’t be worried that you don’t understand anyone. They don’t understand you either.

The first Southern expression to creep into a transplanted Northerner’s vocabulary is the adjective “big ol’ ,” as in “big ol’ truck,” or “big ol’ boy.” “Fixin'” (as in “I’m fixin’ to go to the store”) is 2nd, and “Y’all” is 3rd.

As you are cursing the person driving 15 mph in a 55 mph zone directly in the middle of the road, remember: ALL Southern folks learned to drive on a John Deere, and this is the proper speed and lane position for that vehicle.

If you hear a Southerner exclaim, “Hey, y’all, watch this!” get out of his way. These are likely the last words he will ever say, or worse still, that you will ever hear.

Most Southerners do not use turn signals; they ignore those who do. In fact, if you see a signal blinking on a car with a Southern license plate, you may rest assured that it was already turned on when the car was purchased.

If it can’t be fried in bacon grease, it ain’t worth cooking, let alone eating.

If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the most minuscule accumulation of snow, your presence is required at the local grocery store. It does not matter if you need anything from the store. It is just something you’re supposed to do.

(One last warning but probably the most important one to remember: Be advised that in the South, “He needed killin'” is a valid defense.)
