What is Rosacea?

Your-Health-Online Back-to-Directory A health article about Rosacea from Your Health Online the A to Z directory of dealing with Health Problems & nutritional Self Care Strategies

Did you have that sought-after creamy complexion as a child? If so, when you are in your 20s-40s, you may develop a skin problem of you own. This condition can last a long time, often because it is misdiagnosed as adult acne.

Someone suffering from it typically has flushed cheeks during inappropriate times, such as when your heart rate is normal. Flushing usually occurs only when you are working hard enough to cause sweating. Rosacea is categorized by broken blood vessels in your cheeks, a condition known in the medical world as telangiectasias.

You may also experience inflamed red bumps, called papules or pustules, which is why many think they have adult acne. Other common symptoms of rosacea include face burning sensations, gritty eyes, and thickened skin.

Rosacea is a chronic skin disorder that most often affects the forehead, nose, cheekbones and chin. Groups of capillaries close to the surface of the skin become dilated, resulting in blotchy red areas with small bumps and, sometimes, Pimples.

The redness can come and go, but eventually may become permanent if blood vessels under the skin become dilated, a phenomenon known as telangiectasia. The skin tissue can swell and thicken, and may be tender and sensitive to the touch.

The inflammation of rosacea can look a great deal like acne, but it tends to be more chronic, Blackheads and Whiteheads are almost never present. It is a fairly common disorder-about one in every twenty Americans has it to some degree-but many never realize they have it.

Rosacea usually begins with frequent flushing of the face, particularly the nose and cheeks. The flushing is caused by the swelling of the blood vessels under the skin. This "red mask" can serve as a flag for attention. Inflammation can then spread across the face and small bumps may appear.

Later, swelling of the nose may occur. However, it can take years from the beginnings of this condition before the later stages develop.

Rosacea can also cause a persistent burning and feeling of grittiness in the eyes or inflamed and swollen eyelids. In severe cases, vision can be impaired.

Signs & Symptoms of Rosacea

Rosacea is most common in white women between the ages of thirty and fifty. When it does occur in men, rosacea tends to be more severe, and is usually accompanied by rhinphyma (a nose that becomes chronically red and enlarged.

Fair-skinned individuals seem to be more susceptible to in this condition than darker skinned people. People who flush easily seem to be more prone than others to develop rosacea.

In rare cases, rosacea may affect the skin in other parts of the body as well as the face. It is not a dangerous condition, but it is chronic and can be distressing for cosmetic reasons. Without proper care, it can develop into a disfiguring condition.

What Causes Rosacea?

The underlying cause or causes of rosacea are not understood, but certain factors are known to aggravate the condition, including the consumption of alcohol, hot liquids, or spicy foods; exposure to sunlight; humidity; extremes of temperature; and the use of makeup and skin care products containing alcohol.

Stress, vitamin deficiencies and infection can be contributing factors. The things that aggravate one person's rosacea may have no effect on another person.

Prevention:

• Eat a diet that emphasizes raw vegetables and grains, organically grown if possible.

• Avoid fats, especially saturated fats, and all animal products. Saturated fats promote inflammation.

• Also avoid alcohol, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, dairy products, eggs, fat, fish, salt, sugar, and spicy foods.

• As much as possible, avoid wearing makeup. If you do use cosmetics, choose all-natural, water-based products.

• Friction is extremely irritating, so avoid wearing tight clothing such as turtlenecks that can rub against the skin. Be careful about anything that comes close to or into contact with your face. Even holding the telephone receiver against your face for a while can raise the local temperature and irritate sensitive skin.

When to seek Medical Advice:

If you believe you have rosacea, the best action to take is to see your doctor. This is a chronic condition, but it can be treated so that the symptoms are controlled. It is most important that you learn all you can about your rosacea condition so that you understand how to best treat it as well.

It’s something that many people, especially those of Celtic descent and others with fair and easily burned skin, develop later in life.

To help control the symptoms, you most first learn to control your body temperature. It is important to keep yourself cool and calm to prevent the symptoms from showing up! Stay indoors during extreme weather or wind, when your skin is especially sensitive. Also avoid hot foods and drinks as well as alcohol to avoid warming the core of your body.

Exercise in cool environments, and as a last step, control your other skin care routines by using products that are not oily, perfumed, or cause your skin to dry out.

Remember, mild creams and cosmetics can help you cover up the embarrassing signs of rosacea that you may be experiencing. Avoid toners, exfoliating chemicals, and astringents, but use products made for sensitive skin.

If you find this condition extremely difficult to grasp, your doctor can also recommend support groups for you to interact with others dealing with the same situation. Rosacea is hereditary, but you can live a normal life even if you develop it!
