Is Aloe Vera Effective in Treating Hair Loss?

On average, we lose approximately 100 strands of hair per day. Seeing a few strays of hair on your hairbrush or on your bathroom floor is perfectly normal.

However, if you notice that your hair is shedding more than usual and the amount of hair on your head is visibly thinner, this may be a cause for alarm.

There are many different factors that can cause this problem and they include stress, hormonal imbalance, illness, medication, skin conditions and age just to name a few.

If your hair loss is not that severe, you may want to resort to natural remedies first before trying more expensive, invasive treatments.

One of the most popular inexpensive treatments for this condition is aloe vera. This plant has been used for centuries to cure different ailments and treat a lot of skin and hair problems.

Aloe has shown positive effects in preventing thinning hair. The proteolitic enzymes found in the gel can help promote new hair growth.

They work by removing dead skin cells on the scalp that can clog the hair follicle, preventing nutrients from penetrating the hair.

People with seborrhea (too much oil on the scalp) are prone to thinning hair and baldness.

By applying aloe vera gel on the scalp, excess oil and dead scalp cells are broken down, helping the hair follicles absorb more nutrients. The alkalizing properties of aloe balance the scalp's pH levels, encouraging new hair growth.

Some people who have been applying the gel to their scalp regularly have noticed that their hair is thicker and less prone to breakage.

Aloe vera hair care products are widely available today. However, if you want to take advantage of the full benefits of aloe, stick to its raw form.

It will be great to grow your own aloe vera plants in your backyard but if not, you can always get fresh aloe leaves from nurseries or garden centers.

To use aloe vera gel as a scalp treatment, cut two or more thick leaves from the aloe plant, remove the skin of the leaf to expose the clear jelly inside, break down the jelly and puree it in a blender.

You can add a few drops of fresh lemon juice into the pureed aloe to make your hair shinier. Massage the mixture onto your scalp for 5 minutes and leave it on for 15 to 30 minutes before rinsing it off.

Massaging your scalp can help improve circulation and stimulate hair growth. Shampoo your hair and condition it to lock in the moisture.

Another way to use aloe on your hair is to mix it with your shampoo or conditioner. This will lessen the concentration of the product by lowering the amount of chemicals.

If you want to make your own aloe shampoo, mix 1/4 cup of aloe vera gel with 1/4 cup organic liquid castile soap, 1 teaspoon glycerin and 1/4 teaspoon vegetable oil.

Add a few drops of essential oils to make the shampoo smell pleasant.

Keep in mind that aloe's effectiveness will depend on what causes your hair to fall out. If your hair loss is caused by seborrhea, excessive use of heat on your hair or dandruff, you may find aloe vera beneficial.

However, if hormones, stress or genetics mainly causes your condition then you may want to look for another remedy that can help treat your condition.

As with any other treatment, it will take a couple of months before you see the benefits because hair takes time to grow and natural treatments do not always provide instant results.
