How to Cure Bacterial Vaginosis at Home

Finding a cure for bacterial vaginosis is actually not hard at all. It takes a little patience and some simple lifestyle changes on your part, but nothing earth shattering. Over the coming days, we’ll discuss several of the most basic measures you can take to get rid of it for good.

For today, let’s talk about what causes it and then “reverse engineer” how to get rid of it. Bacterial vaginosis is, of course, a bacterial infection of the vagina. The vagina, being a nice warm and moist host for bacteria, would seem to offer an open invitation for constant infection if it were not for the fact that the body has natural defenses built in. These natural defenses include “good bacteria” of all kinds as well as a normal pH level.

Maybe we should be reminded where these “bad” bacteria came from. First of all, let’s just face the facts: your vagina is right there next to where your stool is evacuated. And we all know stool is comprised of 75% E coli and other bacteria. If you were not careful cleaning yourself after having a bowel movement, there is a good chance that even a tiny amount of stool reached the vaginal opening.

Now that's not as big an issue as it could be if your body is in a healthy balance. The natural defenses just mentioned above manage to keep things in check, killing the bad bacteria. If either of these go out of kilter for any reason – the good bacteria is in low population or the pH level goes too high or too low – then the bad bacteria find an opening and begin to take over.

Now you may have already found this out the hard way. If you had a bacterial vaginosis infection and saw a doctor about it, they gave you a cream to inject into your vagina or you took antibiotics. The antibiotics killed the bacteria alright, both the good and the bad. Now you're open to another nasty infection – the yeast infection.

The idea, now that we know how they got there, is to keep it from happening again. So, first order of business is to employ better toilet hygeine habits. Use toilet paper, carefully wiping from your front to your rear – not the other way around. This way the stool has less chance of infecting the vaginal area.

If you use feminine pads, change them each time you use the bathroom. Change your underwear daily - washing them in hot chlorinated bleached water. Bathe regularly using gentle soap and rinse well.

By reverse engineering how we get sick, we can help to prevent reinfection in the future. Use this common sense, and you will be sure to stop the recurrence of bacterial vaginosis.
