How Alcoholic Beverages Can Effect For Your Diet


A big question that many people have in the back of their minds when they consider dieting is if they will still be able to have a drink.

One of the hardest things for people to eliminate from their diet is alcohol. For a diet to work for most people it may ask you to limit your alcohol consumption but it should allow you to still have a moderate level of alcoholic drinks.

While you may enjoy having a few cocktails at happy hour, this habit can add inches to your waist very quickly.

Calories. The first obvious characteristic of alcoholic beverages is that they often have a lot of calories. In addition to the liquor that’s found in drinks, you also have added calories in the mixes that are often used to make drinks.

Alcoholic beverages are notorious for being high in calories. In order to get a better idea, the average Long Island Iced Tea has over 700 calories and a margarita can have over 350 calories.

If you’re trying to stay under 2000 calories every day, you can see how an alcoholic beverage takes a large portion of those calories.

Increasing hunger. Alcoholic beverages can actually cause you to feel hungrier. When you’re trying to limit your portions, excess hunger (especially when it’s stimulated artificially) is an enemy.

Impeding judgment. When you drink alcohol in excess, you may lose your ability to make good judgment calls about food. Instead of being reasonable and sticking to your diet plan, you may lower your inhibitions and eat larger portions.

Slows down fat burning. Alcohol can also cause you to hold on to your fat a little longer. It actually causes your body to slow down its use of fat to burn calories. That means you won’t lose fat as quickly if you’re drinking a lot of alcohol.

Alcohol doesn’t have to be completely eliminated from your diet, but if you’re serious about losing weight, you’ll need to be very judicious with your use of alcohol. Limit it and make sure that you count the calories.

Focus also on what choices you make. Many medical professionals say that a glass or two of red wine is positive for your health. Limited white wine is also far less damaging than anything mixed with soft drinks, sodas or sweet mixers.

I once knew a boxing coach who trained national champions. He used to tell his boys that he would prefer they did not drink but if they were going to drink then drink scotch and drink it neat or just a splash of water. It is often not the alcohol but the mixers that it is put in which causes the most problem.
