If you change the things you do with your diet then there is a good chance that things will change within your body.

If you have started a detoxification program, or a weight loss program, and you find you are getting headaches, or bad breath, or your pimples get even worse than they were before you “got all healthy” then be glad. It is probably because the program is working.

Signs & Symptoms

When you change your diet you can experience measurable physiological changes from it.

If you are currently drinking 20 cups of coffee and you stoped today you can expect the effects of change of diet over the next few days.

• Coffee is a diuretic so you will become constipated.
• The withdrawal of the stimulants in coffee will lead to headaches, often very strong headaches.
• You may become dizzy or light headed.
• You may have trouble concentrating.
• You may even have shakes in your hands and fingers.

Any significant change of diet can lead to these symptoms.

Types of Change of Diet

There are basically two types of change of diet.

The first is your body reacting to the withdrawal of something that it is used to having, like stopping caffeine, or cigarettes, or high sugar or high salt foods.

The second is due to detoxification where your body is “cleaning house” and is pushing unwanted contaminants out of your system.

What Causes these symptoms or side effects?

When you change your diet, the side effects are coming from detoxification it is because your muscles and organs are releasing toxins.

This may not occur in the first day or two. It could be a week after you begin the program before detoxification effects become obvious.

As you body works to clear the toxins from your system the excess toxins can build up in your blood stream until your body is able to clear them.

This increased toxin level is what causes the symptoms that we recognize as change of diet.

If you have a dull headache, similar to how people describe a mild hangover, then it is probably due to detoxification.

If you have a sharp head ache it is likely to be unrelated to detoxification but it may be linked to withdrawal symptoms of other foodstuffs.

Bad breath is not uncommon, increased body smell all over or specific to feet, slight dizziness, maybe some diminishing of concentration.

It is not uncommon for people who are using a nutrition program to assist in skin problems like pimples to find the problem gets worse before it gets better. If there is a chemical contamination that is part of the problem then when your body is able to clear up the toxins and contaminates then it is normal to have a very good result from the detoxification.

In general, if you are getting any signs of detoxification then it is a good thing.

Do the things we suggest below to reduce the symptoms but keep going because you are on the right track to a cleaner healthier body.

Prevention:

If you have withdrawal symptoms from something you eat then if can recommence eating it or drinking it and the symptoms will normally desist.

There are 2 rules for preventing change of diet issues. They are;

1. Don’t Cut Out, Cut Back.
2. Drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

Don’t Cut Out, Cut Back.

When you are changing your diet do not remove anything in one step. If you are eating a 250 gm block of chocolate every night after dinner then break a block of chocolate into 3 or 4 pieces and lock them away. Each night have just one of those pieces, a ¼ of a block is still eating chocolate but the ¾ you are NOT eating is where you will get your initial success. You can cut it out completely later.

This is what we mean when we say “Don’t cut out, just cut back”. It means you can still enjoy the food you love, though you may be eating less, and it means that you will not get those change of diet problems that come from cutting out addictive foods.

If you are drinking a lot of coffee every day then, as I said, cutting it out will cause problems. Just pick a couple of key times when you really enjoy your coffee and have a couple of cups a day, maybe breakfast and afternoon tea. Plan them and enjoy them works really well for most people.

Remember, if you are looking for long term change in your life then you can afford to be gentle with yourself in the process.

Drink at least 2 liters of water a day.

Detoxification from change of diet is very simple to deal with. All you need to do is to drink enough water. Water flushes the toxins out of your system.

Medical advice has always been that you should be drinking 2 liters of water a day. 2 liters is 8 LARGE glasses of water.

There is a lot of informed opinion around that suggests 2 liters is fine for smaller built people but if you are large framed, or tall, you need to use more water still.

So the answer to change of diet problems in most cases is to increase the amount of water you are drinking.

When to seek Medical Advice:

When ever you have ongoing problems then seeking medical advice is wise. If you do have a problem with change of diet symptoms then going back to your previous diet and then changing it slowly will help.

Stopping a detoxifying diet will stop the symptoms of detoxification but it will also stop the healing benefits.

The best things to do is to stick to the rule for changing your diet:
“Don’t cut out, cut back.”

If I were asked which is the area of greatest misunderstanding and confusion in the field of nutrition, I would definitely be forced to reply, it is the failure to properly understand and interpret the symptoms and changes which follow the beginning of a better program.

A better Nutritional Program is the introduction of foods of higher quality in place of lower quality ones. The quality of a Nutritional Program is also improved by omitting toxic substances such as coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco, salt, pepper, etc.

Remarkable things begin to happen to the body as well as the mind. When the quality of the food coming into the body is of higher quality than the tissue which the body is made of, the body begins to discard the lower grade materials and tissues to make room for the superior which it uses to make the newer and healthier tissues.

What are the symptoms or signs which become evident when we first begin to omit the lower grade foods and instead introduce superior foods? When the use of a toxin is suddenly stopped, headaches are common and a letdown occurs. This is due to the discard by the body of toxins which are transported by the bloodstream during its many bodily rounds. Before the noxious agents reach their final destination for elimination, these irritants register in our consciousness as pain — headache. Usually, within three days, the symptoms vanish and we feel stronger due to the recuperation which follows.

As one continues on the improved diet and gradually raises the quality, interesting symptoms begin to appear. The body begins a process called ``retracing’’. The cellular intelligence has a chance to get rid of old garbage and build a beautiful new house. The accent is on elimination and the body begins to move garbage deposited in the tissues.

People may experience skin rashes or eruptions due to elimination of poisons and harmful drugs through the skin. If they go to a doctor not familiar with this aspect of nutrition, he might diagnose it as an allergy and suggest the diet be discontinued. They don’t understand that the body is ``retracing’’. The skin is becoming more alive and active. These toxins being discarded are saving you from more serious disease which will result if you keep them in your body too much longer. Possibility: hepatitis, kidney disorders, blood disease, heart disease, arthritis, nerve degeneration, or even cancer. Be happy you’re paying your bills now in an easy payment plan. With some, cold may occur, or even fever. THIS IS NATURE’S WAY OF HOUSE CLEANING. Understand that those actions are constructive, even though unpleasant at the moment. DON’T try to stop these symptoms by the use of certain drugs. These symptoms are part of a curing process. These are not deficiency conditions or allergic reactions.

Symptoms then may include: headaches at the beginning, fever and/or colds, skin breakouts, bowel sluggishness. occasional diarrhea, tiredness, nervousness, irritability, negativity, etc.
